Ice dyeing is one of the easiest and most rewarding dyeing experiences there is, and the process is simple: soak the cotton fabric in a solution of soda ash (use 2 cups of soda ash per gallon of water when ice dyeing), then wring it out and tie, fold or scrunch it up, then place it in a colander and cover it in ice or snow, and then sprinkle dye over the ice. Allow the ice to melt overnight in a warm place, and then rinse and wash 24-48 hours later. The ice causes the component colours of the blended dye to “split” and separate, producing an incredible crystalline pattern of many distinct colours, almost like a kaleidoscope. Imagine the folded fabric as a mountain range: the peaks will dye a different colour than the valleys, and you’ll see a beautiful stratification of different colours in between.
